Helping at People First has opened my eyes even wider to the world of people with disabilities, especially those with developmental disabilities. People First is an organization that gives adults with developmenatl disabilities a place to meet others and do activites during the day. One incredibly important thing I learned from People First is to use people first language. People first language is putting the person before any secondary characteristics they may have. For example, instead of saying “that disabled person”, you would say “Chris, who has a developmental disability”. This is important because the words put the person above anything elese that may characterize them. At People First, we worked with consumers with developmental disabilities, participating in arts and crafts with them, as well playing sports and games with them. It was really fun, especially knowing how much we brightened their day. It was really great that they were so excited to see us, and didn’t mind us jumping in to their day to day routines. I came to an understanding that the first thing you see when viewing a person is not to look at what they cannot do, but rather what they can do! Peopl e First has changed my life forever, and I will never forget the experience.
