I have been greatly impacted by the people and the amazing connections I have made at People First. It is incredible that I can understand and bond with a person even though they may not be able to speak or even hear me. I have learned how to adapt to different people’s abilities and strengths. We have talked about people first language which would say for example, “a person with disabilities,” not,” a disabled person.” We phrase words like this to show that someone is a person first and has a disability second, not the other way around. Also, we have discussed how you should appreciate the things a person CAN do, rather than what they CAN’T. I have gained huge respect for the everlasting compassion and dedication from the people involved in this organization and hope that one day I too can make a difference in so many lives.
