At the age of 19, Mariuma Ben-Yosef, the founder of the shanti house, began opening her home every Friday night for Kabbalat Shabbat, providing a warm meal and a feeling of family warmth to homeless youth in Tel Aviv. At that time there were no other solutions available for homeless youth, and Mariuma's home quickly filled with youngsters seeking a place to eat and sleep. Some of the youth stayed for longer periods and soon it became a full time home for homeless youth. In 1992, Mariuma officially established the Shanti House Association. Today shanti house operates 2 homes: one in Tel Aviv and one in the Negev near Mitzpe Ramon in which about 100 youth live at any given time.
Since its establishment in 1984 Shanti house has helped 30,000 youth. Our doors are open 24\7 all year round and we are the only place in Israel that accepts youth without the need of an official referrals from welfare department, police or juvenile court, period of waiting or limit on the time they receive help. Our doors are open to any youth at risk.
Up until today Shanti House has helped more then 30,000 youth in need, and have a success rate of 78% in returning youth into normative life (school, work, army service).
