Someone heard about a food rescue program in New York and they decided that they could do something similar. Rachel’s Table became part of the Jewish Federation of Central MA soon after. The Federation provides office space, legal and insurance coverage and a yearly audit, but no funding.
Rachel’s Table’s hunger relief program uses volunteers to transport donated food from area restaurants, markets, companies, caterers, and individuals to 39 food pantries, group homes, day programs, shelters, and soup kitchens in the city. We provided over 100,000 pounds of donated food-at no cost-last year. Most of this food would be wasted if not donated.
The Children’s Milk Fund purchases and delivers milk for children at 22 agencies every week.
The Summer Meal Program buys fruits and vegetables for meals that are provided at sites throughout the city in the summer when school is closed. Last year over 21,000 pounds of produce was provided for over 90,000 meals.
Rachel’s Table provides special individually wrapped food items for the Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Program that helps the homeless. This food is given to people who haven’t eaten as they wait for other services. $250 is spent every month.
